A purely academic question, and just out of interest, would it amount to actionable libel or slander in the U.K. to write or say that someone was homosexual or a practising homosexual if they were not?
I have absolutely no intention of putting the answer to the test.

So, what is emerging one week after Charlie Kirk’s brutal assassination?
The assassin was the “boyfriend” of a male who fancies himself a woman.

Hmm. I presume you know about the Liberace vs Daily Mirror court case?
(If not, there's a summary here, which I presume may be reasonably accurate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberace#Lawsuits_and_alleged_homosexuality)
It's possible thet the very substantial change in social mores (and, most significantly, that allegations of being a practicising male homosexual would no longer potentially render one liable to prosecution) since 1956 might mean that this precedent no longer applies, but I'm really not sure.
If anything I think that nowadays public opinion would not take favourably to someone who sued in response to such an allegation. At any rate, it is not hard to think of people who have been subject so such allegations in public, who have preferred to simply brush them off.
Thank you, I thought as much.
I remember it well, and later wondered, after Liberace's death from AIDS, whether the Daily Mirror would recover their damages. Presumably Liberace had been guilty of perjury at the trial.
Interesting question since in Britain I don't think that citizens have the same freedom of speech rights as citizens do in the U.S.
Certainly a UK preacher in the street was arrested for saying, when asked, that homosexuality is against the Will of God.

In my experience Civil Law is a rich man's 'game' that tends to exclude the vast majority of the population unless you are unfortunate enough to become the object/subject of high powered legal bullying (an International PLC, and I crossed swords over the issue of the BNP leadership using the Old Addeyans FC clubhouse development for their malevolent 'Planning for Real' meetings)
The openly gay producer/director Mark Storer, and his musical adviser Jules Maxwell http://www.julesmaxwellproject.com/flash.htm recorded my Catholic poetry and songs on a CD ( titled Songs & Dreams for Sad Sister Deptford) for the National Theatre's Box Clever Urban Voices at the Albany Theatre in London.
I am not familiar with the Liberace case, and I know nothing about his personal sex life, but I do know that HIV aka AIDS can be transmitted by unprotected straight sex, and my old friend the famous BBC Black Britain film producer Faith Isiakpere is now working with Mr Mandela to combat the spread of this terrible disease in South Africa, and also to help the innocent 'Children of Africa' who are infected with it from birth.
